Dear Mr. Rahmani:
I read with great interest your recently published book: "L'exode oublié -
Juifs des pays arabes" and wish to thank you for the time and effort expended
in bringing this project to fruition. As a Jew from Egypt, I was of course
familiar with the chapter on Egypt but it was enlightening to read about the
trials and tribulations of Jews from other Arab lands.
You hit a nerve when you wrote:
"Peut-être avons-nous tardé à en parler par respect de la Shoa. Notre tragédie
était infiniment moins lourde que celle qui avait frappé six millions de nos
frères. Nous avions perdu un foyer, un travail, nos amis, nos biens, notre
pays Parfois -- souvent! -- nos familles ont éclaté. Mais qu'était-ce,
comparé au drame de l'Extermination!"
True, the nightmare we were made to endure in those far-off days pales by
comparison to the horrors of the Holocaust. For most of us, there was no
physical trauma (not so for many others), but the psychological trauma was very
real and we cannot and should not sweep it under the rug.
Once again, thank you for an important work.
With Shalom and Salaam,
Maryse Z. (sometimes known as Carioca or Hooser - no big deal)
